The City of Villa Rica's history page says the area was settled in 1826 as Hixtown, and gold was found soon after. A small gold rush followed in the late 1820s, until the larger Georgia Gold Rush of 1829 drew most miners toward Dahlonega. The town was incorporated as Villa Rica, Spanish for "rich village," in 1881, and the first train came through in June 1882.

When the railroad arrived, Hixtown and nearby Cheevestown moved to the present site, and many of the original buildings were rolled there on logs. That area is now the North Villa Rica Commercial Historic District. The city says Wick's Tavern, built in 1830, is the oldest commercial structure in West Georgia.

The city runs the Pine Mountain Gold Museum at Stockmar Park, 1881 Stockmar Road. Its stated mission is to preserve and interpret the history of Georgia's first gold rush. The city's park listing describes 28.78 acres with a 4,800-square-foot museum and theater, a train tour, picnic tables and three miles of walking trails.
